Confessions from the Target: How to Ace Your First Throw
Walking into an axe throwing lane for the first time can feel intimidating. We are breaking down the three most common rookie mistakes—and exactly how our coaches help you fix them.
Let’s be entirely honest: the first time you hold a 1.5-pound camp axe in your hand with the intention of throwing it at a wooden wall, your brain does a little panic dance. It’s a totally natural reaction. Your self-preservation instinct is whispering, "Hey, maybe we just stick to shuffleboard?"
But then you take a breath, square your shoulders, and let it fly.
At Sandbox Axe Throwing, we have watched thousands of first-timers make their very first throw. We’ve seen wild, spinning overhead launches that miss the entire lane, and we've seen gentle, timid underhand tosses that bounce harmlessly off the wood.
If you want to bypass the awkward trial-and-error phase and start sticking bullseyes like a seasoned pro during your first 60-minute session, you need to know what not to do.
Here are the three most common rookie mistakes we see at our lanes—and exactly how you can avoid them.

1. The "Death Grip" Dilemma
When people get nervous, they squeeze. It’s a reflex. We see beginners hold the handle so tightly that their knuckles turn white.
The Mistake: If you squeeze the handle like you're clinging to the edge of a cliff, your fingers won't release at the right time. The axe will either fly straight down into the floor or slip out late, sailing dangerously high.
The Fix: Think of your grip like holding a fresh sleeve of tennis balls—firm enough that it won't slip out prematurely, but relaxed enough that it can slide free. Whether you are using a one-handed or a two-handed grip, keep your wrists straight. Put moderate pressure in your palms, and let the momentum of your swing do the heavy lifting.
2. Flicking Your Wrists
We blame action movies for this one. Everyone wants to give the axe a little extra spin at the end of their throw to make it look cool.
The Mistake: Flicking your wrist causes the axe to over-rotate in the air. Instead of hitting the target business-end first, the flat top or the handle will smack against the wood with a loud, disappointing thud and fall to the floor.
The Fix: Treat your arms like a pendulum. Keep your wrists locked and completely straight throughout the entire motion. When you throw, you aren't trying to spin the blade; you are simply launching it along a smooth arc. Release the axe naturally when your hands reach eye level. Let the natural geometry of the tool do the rotating for you.
3. Treating It Like a Fastball Pitch
There is a common misconception that you need massive upper-body strength to stick an axe. This leads to people trying to hurl the axe as fast and hard as they possibly can.
The Mistake: Throwing with maximum force completely destroys your accuracy and ruins your form. It also tires out your shoulders and back within fifteen minutes.
The Fix: Axe throwing is about tempo and weight transfer, not muscle. Start with your weight on your back foot. Bring the axe smoothly over your head, step forward with your non-dominant foot, and shift your weight into your front knee as you let go. A smooth, medium-paced swing with clean release form will stick much deeper into the wood than a rushed, high-speed throw.

They can stand behind you, watch one single rotation, and immediately tell you: "Step back six inches," or "Keep that left elbow tucked."
